Thread of the Day Should Buick Offer the Regal Turbo and Regal GS

Thread of the Day Should Buick Offer the Regal Turbo and Regal GS The Buick Regal’s 2014-model-year refresh brings its styling up to date with the rest of the tri-shield lineup, but the model also benefits from mechanical upgrades like a revised turbo engine and available all-wheel drive. Scroll through the comments of our 2012 Buick Regal GS first test, and you’ll find at least a dozen readers disappointed that the car’s turbocharged powerplant didn’t drive all four wheels. Now, Buick has granted their wishes, delivering not one, but two turbocharged sedans available with all-wheel drive.

Thread of the Day Should Buick Offer the Regal Turbo and Regal GS

The 2014 Regal GS’ 2.0-liter turbo I-4 is rated at 259 hp, down 11 hp from last year’s rating of 270 hp. Torque remains the same at 295 lb-ft, though GM now claims 90 percent of it is available between 1700 rpm and 5500 rpm. While power decreases slightly in the GS model, power rises significantly for the Regal Turbo, which gets the same power rating as its high-performance stablemate. Both models, when equipped with the available all-wheel-drive system, get GM’s HiPer Strut front suspension as standard. That brings us to today’s Thread of the Day topic inspired by forum member Frisky Dingo: Apart from the Regal GS’ unique bodywork and two selectable driving modes, why should customers choose that model over the improved Turbo trim?

2014 Buick Regal GS rear three quarters1 300x187 imageIn our eight-way luxury sport sedan comparison, the automatic-equipped 2012 Regal GS finished dead last. Of its comparatively lackluster performance, we said, “…over our curvy test loop, we were unimpressed with the Regal’s nervous handling dynamics, frustrating transmission (“Shift Denied!”), and noticeable turbo lag.”

It’s possible the new model could address some of those issues, with the turbo engine now improved and the available all-wheel-drive system capable of sending up to 90 percent engine torque to the rear wheels. However, is Buick shooting itself in the foot by offering many of the GS’ features on the lower-trim model? Furthermore, is the addition of all-wheel drive worth the drop in power? Shelby Raptor Packs 575-HP Supercharged V-8 – 2013 New York

2013 Shelby Ford F 150 SVT Raptor rear three quarters 300x187 imageThe already impressive SVT Raptor is upgraded with a 2.9-liter supercharger, which boosts power of the 6.2-liter V-8 from 411 hp to 575 hp. Helping the force-fed eight-cylinder breathe easier is a Shelby Borla exhaust system, while the stock six-speed automatic transmits its power to all four wheels. Those wheels are shod in 35-inch Goodrich All-Terrain tires, and a custom wheel design is also available. Three graphics packages will be offered, each helping to set the Shelby Raptor apart from lesser, non-supercharged models.

The Shelby Raptor package starts at $17,995 and does not include the cost of the base truck. Each model year, Shelby will build 100 specialty Raptors. Helping to ensure collectability is a documented Shelby CSM number plaque, which is entered into the official Shelby Registry. Shelby is now accepting orders for the supercharged truck, which will join the Shelby Focus ST and 1200-hp Shelby 1000 S/C for the 2013 model-year.

Refreshed 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Revealed on Morning Talk Show

2014 Chevrolet Camaro refreshed front end 300x170 imageIf you’re not a fan of the current-generation Camaro yet, this refreshed model probably won’t change your mind. The headlights and grille appear narrower, and the front valance opening has been widened. A row of vents is placed in the center of the hood for a ZL1-esque look. The big news is the Camaro’s rear end, which might raise a few eyebrows among Camaro fans. In place of the outgoing model’s quad-square taillights are two rectangular lamps. Though the rear end look may have been controversial before, the taillights were one of the Camaro’s most characteristic features. Around the office, comparisons to the first-gen Lexus SC and last-gen Honda Prelude were thrown around.

The show also revealed the 2014 Camaro lineup, which doesn’t appear to have changed. We’ll reserve judgment until we see it on the show floor tomorrow, but what do you think of the refreshed Camaro? Is it an improvement or a step backward? At any rate, detractors of the C7 Corvette can’t complain that car looks like a Camaro from behind anymore.
